Here’s a little experiment for you: Try ice skating on a wobbly rink that’s been coated with oil. Now you know exactly how your cruiser feels when she’s trying to get the hang of walking. Steady, steady and then - boom! - down again.
Putting one foot in front of the other while staying upright requires focus, and every tiny movement she makes is an opportunity to topple. A little support would be nice, right? Fortunately, push toys and walkers offer both support and motivation - exactly what your toddler needs at this time. And let’s be honest, getting around is a lot more fun when you have an adorable sidekick a few paces ahead. Here’s what your baby’s thinking when she takes her push toy/walker out for a spin.
Buttons, spinners, and lights - the best walkers and push toys offer lots of simulating stuff to explore before your bub’s even lifted herself off her bum. She knows you’re super pumped for her to take her first steps, but, ooh, first she’s gotta try these light-up buttons. With bells and whistles this cool, of course she’s gonna want to bring her new bud along when she’s ready to bolt.
Big moment: Your cruiser discovers he can grab hold of a walker and pull himself up from sitting to standing. Nope, you’re not imagining that look of victory on his face. (It’s real!) He may take a tiny step or two, plop back on his bum, and clap for his own success. Cheer with him: In his mind, he just scaled Everest!
Okay, kid, now you’re just showing off. Once your cutie’s feeling more secure on her feet, she’ll use her walker or push toy in all kinds of unique ways. Some moves may seem quirky - like pushing with one hand and waving with the other - but they help her work on gross motor skills, develop a sense of space, and (best of all!) enjoy a little freedom. So, let her move that lion walker or jiggly unicorn push toy around however she wants. Pretty soon she’ll be all smooth sailing forward (and one day even pulling it behind her!) like a pro.
Before you know it, your cruiser will be strutting with confidence - and you can bet she’ll be looking your way every few steps. Are you catching all that ball-poppin’ cool sound and action I’m making with this thing? She’s also understanding (and loving!) the power of cause and effect. Now, she’s obsessed with the magic she can make on her own, just as long as you steer her around corners and keep her safe from stairs. Wow! she’s thinking. I can push this thing on wheels, make it do cool stuff and get around! No stopping me now!
Her legs are looking mighty sturdy these days. And she’s growing out of her adorable penguin waddle and pointing those toes forward like a pro. No wonder: All those laps around the living room with her push-toy/walker buddy are helping her build strength, balance, and confidence.
He goes where he wants now, ‘kay? There’s no stopping him zooming around every room or thinking about what to push next. (Here, let me move that beach cooler for you. Hey, have you ever thought of putting this little table over HERE?) He may even be ready for a push toy he can use outside. You’ll go far, guy.
