We all know about feeling uncomfortable as you get bigger and crave weird foods. And then there’s the morning sickness. But there are a whole bunch of other strange pregnancy symptoms that you may experience. Here are a few that surprised me, but after discussing with my doctor, I was assured are quite common (even if they did seem totally weird!)
Feeling like I needed to spit.
Early on in both of my pregnancies, I had tons of excess saliva, accompanied by a weird metallic taste in my mouth. I have to say that I probably had the cleanest teeth in the world thanks to the extra brushing and mouthwash rinsing I did.
Whether they were science fiction-like or downright dirty in nature, my dreams during pregnancy were definitely out of character for me. I couldn't believe all of the odd things that were apparently floating around my subconscious, but there they were!
Random (and, ahem, embarrassing!) bodily noises.
Whether it was a gurgling stomach, creaking bones, or other sounds that I won't provide further detail about, at times I felt like some alien force had taken over my body and was trying to phone home.
Leg cramps that woke me up at night.
Backaches I expected, but calf muscles that seemed to lock up out of nowhere -- mostly while I slept -- were an unpleasant surprise. Not sure if there's science behind it or not, but eating a banana a day seemed to help. Whatever works, right?
Becoming a clean freak.
My house is neat, but I'm not the type of person who walks around with window cleaner in one hand and a vacuum in the other. Except, that is, when I was nearing the end of my pregnancies. You might have heard about nesting, and I'm here to confirm that everything you heard was an understatement. I cleaned things in my home and in ways I never would have found the time for in the past.
When you think about the medical miracle that's occurring inside of your body, it's no wonder there would be some interesting side effects. Before you freak out, though, ask your doctor or midwife about your symptoms, and more often than not, you'll realize it's just part of the pregnancy adventure.
