It’s easy to catch your child’s excitement about Easter and family celebrations and springtime. What’s not so easy is keeping up with them! You’ve probably noticed your little guy or girl remembers something of your holiday traditions from last year – or maybe, every last detail! “Where are the decorations?” “When are we going to dye eggs?” “Can I hide my basket, just to practice?”
At this age, kids recognize the changing seasons and to them, one holiday leads to the next. If Valentine’s Day is over, and St. Patrick’s Day is past … Happy Easter! Grab that enthusiasm, enjoy your cherished traditions, but start new ones, too. We’ve got some ideas …
Make family recipes – as with most religious holidays, traditional recipes and shared meals are a big part of the celebrations. Get your child in on the action with some of the simpler tasks and as you work together, talk about the people and the stories behind your family’s recipes. It helps to give your kids roots, develop a sense of self and place, and begin to see where they fit within a larger family.
Honor the return of spring – while the holiday is religious and cultural, many people celebrate Easter as signaling the return of spring. Help your child plant a few seeds in a paper cup, water them and watch them grow. There are a number of simple science lessons to be found in that little cup. And when it’s time, you can give the plant a permanent home in the garden where your child can watch it change through the seasons.
Surprise your neighbors – ask your child to draw a picture to represent what your neighbors (or friends or relatives) mean to you. Tuck it inside a plastic Easter egg and let your child place it by their front door Easter morning.
Take an Easter Bunny selfie – yes, it’s really a thing. Try to get your preschooler to sit still long enough to snap a pic (assuming they’re not too traumatized by posing with the giant bunny in earlier years). Having a photo from every Easter will become your favorite decorations; you can display them all together and see how your kids have sprouted, spring after spring.
Decorate Easter eggs – your preschooler can’t wait, and may be ready to add more creative touches this year like stickers or glitter (or whatever the new thing is this year!). If your child has a favorite character, you may see Thomas & Friends Easter eggs (we like this example!) as your child’s likes and creativity come together.
Put your own spin on an Easter egg hunt – rain or shine, indoors or out, in your own backyard or at a public park, this is a not-to-be missed rite of passage! Beyond the sheer delight of it, you’ll have a lot of teachable moments in sharing, taking turns, empathy, not being greedy, not giving up … and wanting to find just one more egg! And when all the eggs have been found, it doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Turn the tables on the Easter Bunny and let your little ones hide the eggs for you. You don’t have to use candy-filled eggs for the hunt, either. Think of things that will build on other gifts you’re giving your child – like Imaginext® figures inside the eggs (or instead of the eggs) to go with a larger playset.
Create baskets full of Easter joy – Thomas & Friends toys, Imaginext characters, Little People® friends … are you sensing a theme? Chances are excellent you can build your child’s entire Easter basket around their favorite characters and toys. Beyond the basics, there are books, clothes, crafts and many more basket-sized treasures bearing familiar faces your child already loves!
Ride down the bunny trail – lots of us give our kids Easter gifts that will take them outside to play. If you’ve been thinking about a Power Wheels® vehicle, we have lots of info on our site. Yes, it’s a big gift – but it’s also one your child will get miles of fun out of, and years of childhood memories!
