It's important to monitor and control the content of games as well as the amount of time a child spends playing them. The games should be appropriate for the age of the child and there should be a good balance of other activities in his life, including physically active play.
It's advisable to set a limit of screen time allowed per day or week and avoid games with violent content. Some research suggests that they have a negative effect on a child's behavior.
