Is our 5-year-old overweight?
Q: Our 5-year-old daughter is in the 50th percentile for height and 90th for weight. We don’t have junk food, juice and sugar at home, and she eats regular meals with fruit and vegetables. Her doctor has suggested she’s overweight. What should we do?
A: Based on what you are telling be about your family food choices, you probably have nothing to worry about at this time. Your daughter may grow three inches over the summer and all of the sudden her body mass index will be where it should be. I suspect that your pediatrician is just telling you to be aware of a possible trend, which is very responsible on his part. Keep her physically active, especially when she begins school, and I think you’ll see her slim down without you having to resort to any drastic measures.
