Is it important to take folic acid throughout pregnancy?
Q: I’ve heard that taking folic acid is important when trying to become pregnant. Should I continue taking this vitamin once I am pregnant?
A: Folic acid has been shown to reduce the number of babies afflicted with spina bifida, a serious nervous system disease of newborns. Research has shown an 85% reduction of this rare condition in women taking at least .4mg of folic acid daily. Multivitamins, fortified breads and orange juice are also good sources of additional folic acid.

Once pregnant, it is important to continue taking folic acid, especially in the first three months when the baby’s spine and nervous system are developing. Folic acid is important to help prevent anemia in the mother, as well. I recommend taking folic acid throughout pregnancy
