A child’s first few years are crucial. More than at any other stage of life, it’s a time to play, grow, learn and develop.
But imagine you’re a child who starts the day hungry because there is no food for breakfast. Or cold because your family can’t afford to have the radiators on. Or deprived of the toys you need to just be a child and play.
For many children in the UK this is everyday life – a staggering 3.9 million children are growing up in poverty in this country. Their childhood is not so much a chance to play and learn as a struggle just to get by.
Without a good night’s sleep, a full stomach or toys to give them the mental and physical stimulation they need, it’s much harder for a young child to play and learn.
We’re teaming up with Save the Children to change the story for the poorest children in the UK. As one of the world’s best-loved toy makers, we understand that when you give children the opportunity to play, you’re giving them the chance to discover, to wonder and to grow. When children get to play, they get to learn and to develop the foundation they’ll need for life.
Both Save the Children and Fisher-Price® champion the power of play in giving children the best possible start. That’s why £1 from the sale of 16 different toys in Fisher-Price’s Laugh & Learn® range purchased at Argos UK online and in store between 2nd of November and the 24th of December 2016, will go to Save the Children. These donations will help to provide vital household items such as beds, cookers, books and toys to help UK’s poorest children grow, learn and play.
This will help give families the opportunity to create a positive home environment, reducing the family stress associated with poverty and helping ensure children can learn and develop healthily. It’s a vital part of their work to give every child the best start in life.
When children are playing with toys, they’re figuring out the world around them and building skills for life. They inspire creativity and imagination; they promote dexterity and hand-eye coordination. They contain learning activities, accelerating children’s development, encouraging parent-child interaction – and building a culture of learning at home.
Together, we’ll help families going through the toughest times get the basics they need:
It’s vital youngest children get the chance to learn and play. Every day Fisher-Price® toys give millions of children across the world that chance. Now we’re teaming up with Save the Children to give the UK’s poorest children the chance to play and learn too.
