Like most new parents, you’re likely on the lookout for your baby’s big milestones—I know I was. First smile, first tooth, and, of course, those first steps—all of the typical baby experiences that make for a wonderful baby book entry. There are a lot of other milestones worth celebrating, however, even if they’re not the kind you’d find in a baby book.
Sleeping through the night.
As a new parent, I was always talking about sleep—how much I was getting or not getting. Baby sleeping through the night is a huge milestone. But mom and dad sleeping through the night is a huge milestone, too! Getting sleep again puts a bounce in everyone’s step, not just your baby’s.
First successful messy diaper change.
The first time I took my baby out, I was surprised with a massive
diaper mess. That was certainly one for the books. Once you’ve experienced the mother-of-all-blowouts outside
your home, and survived to laugh about it, it’s a turning point in adventures with your baby. There was nothing I couldn’t handle after that.
First outing with baby.
Your first trip out with baby—whether it’s to the supermarket, to visit grandma, or just a car ride up the street—is a major milestone. I survived my first outing with my little one without any major meltdowns, so I considered it to be a success. Just remember: always carry extra diapers (see above!)
First night away from baby.
This was, perhaps, one of my biggest milestones as a mother: spending the night away from my little girl. At this point, I hadn’t been away from her for more than a couple of hours. I knew it would be difficult to tear myself away, but I took the plunge and—of course—everything worked out! I even got a couple more hours of sleep in that night. Win-win.
