Why are my gums bleeding?
Q: I'm pregnant for the first time and my gums seem to be bleeding at times. Is this normal?
A: First I want to say, congratulations! When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes many changes. One of them may involve hormones associated with gum health. Consequently, what would not normally cause gum problems may do so while you're pregnant. Bleeding gums are common. Because this is happening to you, make sure you're practicing extra caution in your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth and gums with a soft, polished bristle toothbrush, and floss between your teeth at least once a day. I would also recommend that you see your dentist and inform him or her that you're pregnant.
