"¡Mira esto!", grita su preescolar, tirando al canasto con una mano o corriendo en círculos con la bicicleta. A los cuatro o cinco años, los niños tienen la confianza para comenzar a añadir su estilo personal a las actividades físicas: vueltas, velocidad, movimientos hacia adelante o hacia atrás, saltos, rebotes rítmicos. Para alentar esta confianza en sí mismo al moverse, vea los Consejitos para Jugar a continuación.
Once children have mastered the basic moves of riding vehicles or sports games, they often want to try a new trick. Yet each innovation challenges their new-found confidence. They might not feel in control. They might mess up. If they're on a bike or skates, they could tumble. Again, children may need your positive coaching to build skill on skill. Remind your child of similar past achievements. "I know you can do the next thing too." If success comes slowly, suggest a break and trying again later. Help cultivate a pattern that leads to achievement and its end resultself-confidence.
With child-sized and child-adapted sports equipment, the physical activities preschoolers can do have expanded. Basketball sets literally grow, in small increments, to match and challenge a child's progress. Cool-looking in-line skates, especially designed to adjust from beginner to advanced status, help keep preschoolers on their feet. A broader baseball bat makes it easier for rookies to hit the ball. With lots of time to practice on child-sized sports equipment, your child is building confidence and preparing for "real" skates, a bigger basketball and other new sports or activities, armed with a "Can Do" attitude.
Older preschoolers are becoming more aware of "real" sports. Some children may have already started swimming lessons or had introductory classes in gymnastics, martial arts, dancing or ice skating. How do you know what sports might interest your child? By providing a wide variety of athletic toys and activities at home, and playing with and observing your child, you'll be better able to assess your child's skills and interests. At four to five, children begin to tackle the most challenging levels of many sports toys. The boost of self-confidence your child gains from mastering these new abilities will carry over to more advanced "real" sports.
