Giving your child opportunities to use gross motor and fine motor skills will help develop a wide range of coordination skills. On a trike, your child learns balance, steering and pedaling forward and backwardall good for large motor control. A drawing board inspires activities that require fine hand and finger control and eye-hand coordination. Your child learns to hold a crayon or marker in position to draw horizontal and vertical lines, gradually gaining the skill to trace an object, copy a circle or write a letter. Each accomplishment, from simple to complex movements, helps bolster your child's self-confidence. Your child thinks, "I can do it!" and is ready for the next challenge.
By the time your child masters stairs or rolling a ball, you've already had experience as a coach. Now your role has new possibilities, as you help your child build skill upon skill to master complex activities like basketball or climbing a ladder. While you coach, you can set up your child for success by offering positive verbal encouragement at every step of your child's progress. Keep in mind that young children are still discovering what their bodies can and cannot do. If your child reaches a physical hurdle, simply say, "Nice try. I know you can do it. Let's try again later." Gradually, your child will imitate the same type of positive self-talk that you have been instilling all along.
If children have a mental picture of achievement in their heads, they may be more likely to pedal a trike or hit a ball. Young gymnasts, for example, visualize themselves making all the right moves before working out on their equipment. If your child is ready to skate, ask your child to imagine skating really well. Paint the picture in words. Watching a more accomplished skater might help inspire the imagery. With your encouragement, your child will be able to visualize success, achieve it in small steps, and move to the next level with confidence.
