Your child is wide open to hearing how you and others express themselves. Taped nursery rhymes, stories from the library or familiar voices may stimulate your child to imitate themthe first step toward self-expression. Musical tapes may move your child to dance, another form of self-expression. Children also enjoy taping their own voices and rerecording to improve the way they sound. The more confidently and clearly children express themselves, the more ready they'll be to relate to others in social play.
How cute! Your son or daughter is blowing pretend soup to cool it or pouring you a cup of your favorite coffee from a play coffee maker. Then you see the pride and deep concentration in your little cook's face. That's because pretend cooking is more than fun. It's a chance to try out the ground rules of cooking in a safe environment. It's a way to creatively add a pinch of this, a dash of that. It's an exercise in expressing one's unique flair while serving family and friends. When you set the stage with cooking and shopping toys, you also provide an opportunity for your child to interact with you and others.
Your child's first practice in social skills was probably playing with you. As your child begins playing with others, continue encouraging sociability by providing toys that invite group play. In a low-key way, help children to extend their make-believe conversations by asking open-ended questions (those that can't be anwered "yes" or "no"). At a tea party ask, "Who are the guests?" or "What are you serving?" Children will think of descriptions or information on their own, opening up new possibilities. A nonintrusive approach works well in resolving group misunderstandings and difficulties, too. When children work out problems on their own, they learn what it means to play well with others and take a big step socially.
