To help your emerging talker, look for toys that provide an environment for interaction. A toy tea set, for example, gives your child a fun prop for engaging other people in imaginative play. When your child pretends to fill your cup and asks if you want sugar or milk, your child uses important skills: bringing out a response from others; taking the initiative; cooperation; getting involved. Often a play phone, camera or toy with play figures can provide common ground for parent-child conversation, enabling you to draw closer to your child. Play makes communication even more fun.
As the best interpreter of your child's phrases or short sentences, you're the perfect conversational mentor. When your child talks, repeat what's been said to assure your child you understand, adding a few words to expand your child's speech. Try asking a question that could lead to further conversation. As you carry on a conversation, your child is listening and trying to imitate you. By embellishing your child's speech, you lay the groundwork for ongoing language development and communication.
A playset with rolling vehicles gives you and your toddler the perfect stage for play talk and the kind of interaction that stimulates speech. While you and your child roll vehicles or work the action features, you can describe what's happening. "Lift the lever." "See the cars go round and round." "The teeter totter goes up and down." When you use descriptive, expressive words, you help your child link the sounds of speech to meaning. Images of concepts form in your toddler's mind long before they're expressed in words. Later, imitating you, your child will draw them into speech, enriching communication.
Early speech and the all-purpose pointed finger aren't your toddler's only means of communication. Children express themselves in the way they control playthings and toys and make unique things happen. Simple musical instruments and easy-to-use art supplies provide a means of communication and self-expression. You might show your child how to toot a horn or hold a large crayon. But let children work out their own approach. To inspire even more self-expression, expose your child to a wide variety of music. Call attention to the variety of colors and patterns all around. You'll be encouraging another dimension of communication.
