There's no
Choosing toys that can be played with in many ways—open-ended toys, like blocks—gives your baby experience in problem solving and the joy of accomplishment. Through trial and error, your baby will gradually find building techniques that work. As you play together, you may notice a moment when your baby recognizes an accomplishment. Share in your baby's delight. Conquering little challenges helps children find their own answers and prepares them to tackle the next question.
Repetitive play signals baby's interest
Maybe you've observed your baby expertly working the action features of an activity toy over and over. Your baby has this toy down pat. So should you retire it? Take a closer look. If your baby is really engrossed, and happily babbling too, something intrinsic to the toy is providing a lot of enjoyment. If your baby hasn't played with a toy for months, put it away for a while, then reintroduce it and watch what happens. Children often come back to old toys with new skills and different play strategies. Behind the fun and repetition of play, your baby's brain is building thinking patterns that will help solve more complex challenges in the future.
When you play peek-a-boo or choose toys with hidden surprises, you're helping your baby understand the permanence of unseen objects while you stimulate memory. Another game—"What's Different?"—can encourage your baby's budding ability to recognize when something is missing or added. Show your baby one stuffed animal, then hide it behind your back. Now come out with two or three. Put the animals behind you again and bring out only one. Even young babies will notice the difference if one toy isn't there, almost as if they were counting. By arousing your baby's natural thinking skills, you'll be equipping baby to make sense of the world and work through little challenges.
