Snowballs Winter Warmer Sparkling Fruit Sundae Snap, Crackle and Eat!

WEEK 1. SNOWBALLS
Turn ordinary ice cream into special snowballs that will delight the kids at snack time.
Ages:
2 and up
Servings:
6
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart vanilla low-fat frozen yogurt
  • 1 cup coconut or decorative sprinkles
  • 6 ice cream cones (or bowls)
What to do:
  1. Soften the frozen yogurt slightly.
  2. Scoop out the yogurt into 6 round balls.
  3. Set the balls in the freezer on waxed paper to refreeze until firm.
  4. Set out plates with a layer of coconut or decorative sprinkles on them.
  5. Remove the snowballs from the freezer and give one to each child.
  6. Let them roll their snowballs in the coconut or sprinkles until the balls are completely covered.
  7. Set each snowball into an ice cream cone or bowl, and let the kids eat their creations.
  8. For added fun, give them little chocolate chips to make faces on their snowballs.

WEEK 2. WINTER WARMER
Heat up a Winter Warmer to take the cold away and serve them in fancy mugs for added fun.

2 and up

Ingredients:
  • 6 cups low-sugar apple juice
  • 6 cups cranberry juice cocktail
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
What to do:
  1. Heat apple juice and cranberry juice cocktail in a saucepan.
  2. Allow it to cool a little so the drink isn't so hot that it burns the kids' mouths.
  3. Pour into fancy coffee mugs, one for each child.
  4. Add a cinnamon stick stirrer and tell the kids to stir their drinks with the stick.
  5. Let them taste the cinnamon stick and describe the flavor.
  6. Remove the sticks so they don't eat them or choke on them.

WEEK 3. SPARKLING FRUIT SUNDAE
Jazz up an old favorite with a little pizzazz and serve this nutritious snack when the kids run out of energy.
Ages:
3 and up
(Under 3, make sure the fruit is cut up finely.)
Servings:
6-8
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup seedless grapes, cut in half
  • 1 10-ounce can mandarin orange slices, drained
  • 1 8-ounce can pineapple chunks, cut up, but reserve the juice
  • 1 pear, apple or 1/2 melon, cut up
  • 1 sliced banana
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup sparkling apple cider
  • 6-8 maraschino cherries
What to do:
  1. Combine fruit in a large bowl and mix well.
  2. Spoon equal amounts into 6 or 8 dessert bowls.
  3. Combine pineapple juice, orange juice and sparkling cider in a pitcher.
  4. Pour the juice mixture over each bowl of fruit and stir gently.
  5. Top with a maraschino cherry if you like, and serve to the kids with a spoon.

WEEK 4. SNAP, CRACKLE AND EAT!
Create a cereal buffet bar so the kids can choose and assemble their own special treat!
Ages:
3 and up
(Under 3, make sure the fruit is cut into small pieces and omit raisins and nuts to prevent choking.)
Servings:
6
Ingredients:
  • 4-6 different cereals, low-sugar preferred
  • 4-6 toppings, such as cut-up strawberries, cantaloupe, bananas, blueberries, raisins, coconut, chopped nuts, and sprinkles
  • 6 tablespoons low-fat, low-sugar whipped cream or topping, optional
  • 6 maraschino cherries, optional
  • 6 cups low-fat milk
What to do:
  1. Pour the cereals into individual bowls and set them on the table with spoons.
  2. Put the toppings into individual bowls and set them on the table with spoons.
  3. Give each child a small bowl and let them choose which cereals they want to put in their bowls.
  4. Let them add some toppings.
  5. Fill a small bowl with whipped topping or let the kids squirt a dollop of whipped cream on top of the cereal mixture.
  6. Add a cherry on top, if you like.
  7. Set a small pitcher of milk on the table and let the kids pour milk onto their cereals.
  8. Give them spoons to enjoy their buffet bowls.
