Potato Latkes Santa Mocha Crispy Christmas Trees Cookie House

WEEK 1. POTATO LATKES
Make and serve a Hanukkah specialty for the kids to share and enjoy together.
Ages:
2 and up
(Under 2, let them taste a bite of the latke.)
Servings:
6
Ingredients:
  • 4 potatoes, grated (or use pre-cut hash browns)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Margarine
  • Sour cream or applesauce
What to do:
  1. Let the kids help you mix grated potatoes with egg and flour in a medium bowl.
  2. Have the kids stand back or sit at the table while you heat the skillet to medium high.
  3. Place a tablespoon or two of margarine in a medium skillet.
  4. Drop large rounded spoonfuls of potato mixture into the pan.
  5. Fry on both sides for a few minutes, until brown.
  6. Place latkes on plates and allow them to cool a little.
  7. Serve with a tablespoon of sour cream or applesauce.

WEEK 2. SANTA MOCHA
Heat up Santa's favorite holiday drink to warm the kids' tummies on these cold days.
Ages:
3 and up
(Under 3, avoid the marshmallows and candy canes.)
Servings:
6
Ingredients:
  • 6 cups chocolate milk (or regular milk mixed with chocolate powder)
  • Mini-marshmallows, optional
  • 6 small candy canes, optional
What to do:
  1. Heat chocolate milk in a saucepan until warm—not boiling.
  2. When warm, pour into mugs. Allow to cool if milk is too hot.
  3. Serve to kids with a couple of mini-marshmallows and a candy cane stirrer, if desired.

WEEK 3. CRISPY CHRISTMAS TREES
Turn an old favorite into a holiday treat with a little imagination and decorative candies.
Ages:
3 and up
(Under 3, just serve crispy cereal)
Servings:
8
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 40 marshmallows
  • 5-6 cups crisp rice cereal
  • Green colored sprinkles
  • Red-hot candies or a tube of red icing
What to do:
  1. Melt margarine and marshmallows in a large saucepan over low heat.
  2. Stir in crisp rice cereal and mix well.
  3. Spread in a buttered 8 by 12-inch pan.
  4. Sprinkle with green sprinkles.
  5. Allow to cool.
  6. When cool, cut into tree shapes using a cookie cutter.
  7. Add red hots or dots of red icing "ornaments" to decorate the tree.
  8. Serve to kids so they can enjoy their Crispy Christmas Trees!

WEEK 4. COOKIE HOUSE
This is a treat that doubles as an activity—you can eat the snacks while you decorate the house!
Ages:
3 and up
(Under 3, let them decorate a graham cracker or just eat it.)
Servings:
6
Ingredients:
  • 6 pint-sized cartons of milk
  • 6 graham cracker squares per person
  • 2 cans frosting
  • A variety of Christmas cookies
  • Tubes of icing
  • Decorative candies, optional
What to do:
  1. Pour the milk into glasses and save in the refrigerator for snack time.
  2. Rinse and dry the milk cartons.
  3. Give each child a milk carton and six graham crackers.
  4. Have them frost each side of the milk carton with icing and glue on a graham cracker square.
  5. Glue the last two crackers to the sides of the top of the carton to make the roof.
  6. Have the kids decorate the house with cookies and decorative candies, using icing to stick them on, or just use the tubes of icing to decorate them.
  7. Let the kids nibble on some of the cookies as they work.
  8. Let them eat their cookie house when they're finished, with glasses of milk, or save them to take home.
