Stencil Hearts

Materials

  • Pencil
  • Paper plate
  • Child's blunt-tip safety scissors
  • Red, white, or pink construction paper
  • Sponge
  • Red, white, and/or pink tempera paint
  • Clear contact paper (optional)
  • Marker (optional)

Instructions

  1. Draw a heart on the center of a paper plate.
  2. Cut out the heart by poking through the center of the plate and cutting from the inside out so the rim of the plate stays intact. (You will use the plate as a stencil.)
  3. Hold the paper plate stencil against the construction paper.
  4. Have your child dip the sponge into the paint and dab it over the stencil.
  5. Lift the stencil, move it to another part of the paper, then dab again.
  6. Continue dabbing and moving the stencil until the paper is covered with hearts.
  7. When the paint is dry, use the painting as a greeting card, or cover it with clear contact paper and use it as a Valentine’s Day place mat.
  8. If you like, use a marker to write love messages on each heart.
