Pretzels
Materials
1 1/4 cups warm water
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour
1 egg, beaten
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Measure the water and sugar into a large bowl. Stir until the sugar is almost dissolved, then sprinkle the yeast into the water. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes.
Add the salt and flour to the mixture and mix until the dough forms a ball. Knead on a floured surface until the dough is smooth.
Cut the dough into small pieces, or pull off enough dough to form balls about 11/2 inches in diameter. Help your child roll the balls into ropes about 12 inches long.
Twist the dough ropes into pretzel shapes and place them on a greased baking sheet.
Brush the pretzels with beaten egg and bake them for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
