My 5-year-old can't tie her shoes!
Amy Kansas City
Many children can't tie shoes until they are 6 years old. For now I would just make certain that her shoes fasten with Velcro. If she complains or protests that she wants shoes with laces, tell her that will have to wait until she is ready to learn to tie a bow.

There is a way that teachers in early childhood programs use to help young children tie their shoes, though I'm not sure I can describe it adequately without a diagram. But I'll try. Make a loop with the right string, then a loop with the left string. Now tie those in a single knot. The resulting knot will hold for most of a morning!
