Spending time with our grandson almost everyday is a special treat for us. He is a joy and so much fun. We make the same holiday foods for special days and now he helps shop for them and prepare things with us.

Every year since my children were little, on Christmas Eve, I bake a birthday cake for Baby Jesus. Now that two of my granddaughters are older (twins who are 7 years old), they help to bake and decorate the cake. On Christmas Day, after dinner, we light the candles on the cake, the grandkids hold the Baby Jesus (from the Fisher Price Manger)and we all sing Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus.

Wow, grandchildren are so amazing. Every year for Christmas we have to let each grandbaby (whoseever turn it is) put our angel on our tree. Right now my tree has gone without an angel this whole month because it is my oldest granbaby's turn and she is not coming to our home until the 23rd. That is when my tree will come alive. We will have seven our our eight here for Christmas and everyone will be here for New Year's Eve. What a true blessing they are. You love them in a totally different way than you love your children.

I want to keep the tradition going with the kids enjoying Santa and the gifts, but I want them to not forget the real reason for Christmas: Jesus's birthday and the nativity scene. We also bake our favorite cookies and have a cookie baking party.

I make sure they have the pj's to open on Christmas Eve. We decorate a gingerbread house, and they have their own Christmas ornament with their name and year to put on the tree.

My mother crocheted little stocking ornaments for her grandchildren and put in a lip balm, a bit of Christmas candy and a dollar bill. The kids looked forward to their little stockings as much as they did the larger amounts of cash they received from their other grandparents, who had more expendable income and fewer grandchildren to spread it among. My mother passed away just a couple of months after my first grandchild was born. I'd been thinking about carrying on the stocking tradition and decided to do it in her memory. My grandchildren love the stockings as much as their parents did.
