Fun Family Activities Before Your Baby Can Crawl

A new baby means a lot of changes and a new routine for everyone, but what it doesn’t mean is an end to the fun you and your partner enjoyed, pre-baby. Before my baby could crawl, she was pretty happy just hanging with me and checking out her amazing new world. We took the opportunity to embrace this time to get out and about and enjoy our newly bigger family. Here are a few baby-friendly activities that I enjoyed in my baby-free days that are just as much – if not more fun – now.

Eating out. This might seem like an odd activity, but when my daughter was young, she was a great restaurant companion. My husband and I love going out to eat, and never encountered any issues with bringing our little one -- from her or the restaurant staff. I found that she usually slept in her car capsule under the table, and once she was few months of age she could sit on my lap or in a high chair.

Food fairs and markets. We found a great way to spend time together was checking out markets and food fairs. We just popped our daughter in her carrier to more easily navigate crowds, and enjoyed browsing for treasures or tasting delicious local food. To this day, one of my favorite weekend activities is checking out the local farmers market with my baby. It’s a great way to get some shopping done while spending time outdoors!

Picnics. These are the perfect family outings -- especially for my little girl, who loves looking at simple things like leaves and flowers. On summer weekends, my husband and I love to pack a blanket and a delicious lunch, and then sit back, relax, and enjoy the serenity. What beats that?

Galleries and museums. Let your baby become your art companion! It’s a really fun outing to head to an exhibition you’ve wanted to check out. Show your baby colors and shapes. It’s still too early for her to understand what they are, but she will enjoy anything with high contrast (if she’s a newborn) or paintings with lots of bright colors (if she’s a bit older). I’ve found most galleries are fine with strollers, but a carrier can be good option to let you keep your hands free.
