Will I need a C-section because of a hernia?

As you know, a hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall that can allow the abdominal contents to protrude. Having a hernia will not usually prompt a physician to recommend a Caesarean section. However, if there is an obstetric indication for a C-section, it might be possible to have your hernia repaired at the same time.

I recommend consulting with a general surgeon about the hernia, particularly if you are having pain. He/she can discuss whether another hernia repair is advisable or whether you can wait to be evaluated in the months following your pregnancy. One other consideration is your plan on future childbearing. If you become pregnant again in the future, you may stress the hernia repair and lose the benefits of surgery. Some doctors may recommend that you postpone your hernia repair until you have completed childbearing.
