Q:
What should I bring with me to the hospital when I go into labor?
A:
It's hard to predict when labor will occur, so it's a good idea to be prepared a few weeks in advance. Here's a list of some important items to include when you pack your bags.
1. You health insurance card and proof of insurance. Some hospitals require a government issued picture identification card as well.
2. Your hospital preregistration form.
3. A list of people that you would like to call and a prepaid phone card or cell phone.
4. At least one copy of your birth plan, if you made one.
5. A notebook or pen.
6. A tennis ball or hand-held massage tool.
7. Your favorite pillows.
8. A favorite picture of a child, relative or pet if you want to make your room more like home.
9. A camera or video camera with spare film and batteries. (I can't tell you how many times I've seen families run out of film or batteries. Consider packing a disposable camera in case your usual camera doesn't function properly.)
10. A change of clothes and snacks for your partner.
11. A bathing suit for your partner if he or she wishes to join you in the shower.
12. A portable stereo and your favorite music to listen to during labor.
13. Lip balm.
14. Massage lotion or oil.
15. A comfortable nightgown or loose pajamas that will allow you to nurse, and a nursing bra.
16. Toiletries.
17. A bathrobe and slippers.
18. Warm socks and several pairs of underwear.
19. An outfit for you to wear home.
20. An outfit for your baby to wear home, and a receiving blanket.
