Q:
I was told my baby has “dropped”, but I’m still four weeks away from my due date. Should I be worried? I seem to feel better physically, but I’m concerned that the baby will arrive too soon.
A:
When the baby moves deep into the pelvis, it has “dropped.” Many women have less chest and rib pressure, an easier time breathing and have a decidedly different stomach shape. For first-time mothers, “dropping” is an exciting and scary event. They assume the baby is coming very soon, but are often disappointed to find themselves pregnant for four to six more weeks. I reassure my patients that “dropping” is a normal event, although it does not have to precede labor. So get your bag packed and finish the baby’s nursery. The baby will be coming when she/he is ready.
(Women on their second pregnancy and beyond typically will not drop before labor.)
