Q:
My fiancé's 8-year-old daughter refuses to sleep in her own bed. Her mother and grandmother don't mind when she sleeps with them. How do we encourage Mary to sleep on her own, especially if there's no support from her mother?
A:
You're right. Mary should be sleeping in her own bed. Your fiancé needs to clearly state to his daughter that Daddy believes it's best for kids her age to be grown-up and sleep in their own bedrooms.
I suggest that you, your fiancé and Mary fix up a special bedroom for her. Then establish a pleasant bedtime ritual to help her settle down and go to bed. An 8-year-old child is perfectly capable of sleeping in her own room.
