Q:
My 2½-year-old daughter loves to watch “Dora the Explorer.” She has the stuffed characters of Boots and Swiper. My concern is that she prefers Swiper over her other stuffed animals. On the show, Swiper is the sly fox who tries to swipe things from Dora and Boots. Should I be concerned that my daughter enjoys a thieving fox over the fun, bubbly Boots? Is this a sign of how her character will develop?
A:
I think you’re reading too much into your daughter’s preference. You’re looking at Swiper from an adult’s point of view, while your daughter sees him through the eyes of a 2-year-old. Why don’t you buy her a Dora doll and see how she takes to it? I have found there are many good lessons for kids to learn from Dora’s adventures. Even if she continues to favor the thieving fox over the other characters, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
