My OB mentioned seeing “cystoids” in my baby’s brain during my first ultrasound. She said this is normal and I should not to be worried. I haven’t found any information about them and am starting to worry a little. What can you tell me about them?
I believe your doctor is referring to choroid plexus cysts. These small fluid collections are a common ultrasound finding. They are ringlets of fluid in the section of the brain reserved for fluid production, not the area where thinking or movement occurs. This fluid acts like a shock absorber for the brain, allowing it to float within our skull. These cysts are benign and usually disappear in the course of the pregnancy.
If the cysts are found in an ultrasound with any abnormal findings, which is rare, an amniocentesis is recommended.
If, after reading this, you’re still worried, call your doctor and share your concerns.
