I recently read that if my child only drinks bottled water, I should consider giving him fluoride supplements. Is this something I should be concerned about? My son is 4.
Most bottled waters do not contain fluoride, a mineral that helps bones and teeth to be strong. Many cities and towns add fluoride to the public water system, so those who drink some tap water receive a reasonable amount of fluoride that way. However, children who only drink bottled water would not get the benefit. Fluoride supplements are currently given by prescription only, so I would discuss this with your pediatrician and your son’s dentist. This would also apply to families who rely on well water.
