If I’m stressed out, am I hurting my unborn baby?
Q: We have had a very stressful few months. I am worried that this will hurt my baby. How do I know if everything is all right?
A: Stress usually doesn’t affect a baby. There are, of course, exceptions, like when stress causes you to eat less, to the point where you’re losing weight. If you use alcohol or drugs when you become stressed, this can also endanger your baby. Otherwise, the baby is oblivious to your concerns and stress.

To reassure yourself, speak with your practitioner. He or she can measure your uterus to make sure the baby is growing well. In certain situations, an ultrasound can be used to check the baby’s growth, too. If your stress continues, it would be a good idea to find ways to address the individual issues that are causing it. Ask for help from your partner or your family.
