Sports drinks: suitable for kids?
Q: My son is always asking me to put sports drinks in his lunchbox, but I have heard they can be bad. What should I know?
A: Sports drinks are not appropriate thirst quenchers for most children. They are intended to replace sodium and potassium in adult athletes who perspire heavily during physical activity, and they do not provide the vitamins and minerals found in 100 percent juice. If your son refuses to drink milk or juice at lunchtime, shop together to find a suitable beverage that is not a sports drink, does not contain corn syrup or artificial sweeteners but is lightly flavored with natural flavors. Remember, most bottled drinks do not contain fluoride. Pack pudding or yogurt in his lunch to give him his calcium serving.
