Are over-the-counter cold & pain medications safe to take during the first trimester?
Q: My husband has been sick for nine days, and now I feel like I’m coming down with something, too! Is it safe for me to take over-the-counter cold medicines while I’m in my first trimester of pregnancy? What about taking just plain aspirin or other pain medications?
A: Dear Crystal,

Each obstetrician has his or her own personal view regarding the use of over-the-counter cold medications during pregnancy. Speak with your physician about their opinion on this topic. As for pain relief medications, my first choice is acetaminophen. The use of aspirin and ibuprofen during pregnancy is carefully regulated and used sparingly up until the 28th week in my practice. You should speak with your doctor about their opinion on this topic.
