Third Trimester Checklist
Reaching your third trimester is a true accomplishment. By now, your baby is well developed, and will use the next weeks primarily for growing bigger. You'll be gaining around a pound a week. While staying active is important, you may need additional iron and require more rest to alleviate fatigue.

  • Rest and sleep on your side rather than your back. Use pillows to prop yourself in this position.
  • Begin your childbirth preparation classes. Aim to finish your classes around 36 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Create a birth plan for labor and delivery; discuss your preferences with your doctor or midwife.
  • Sign up for a newborn care class and an infant CPR class if you're not experienced with caring for a newborn baby.
  • Enroll in a lactation class to help you prepare to breastfeed.
  • Make sure you're registered at your desired hospital or birthing center; take a tour prior to your big event.
  • Choose a pediatrician for your baby. You can schedule an interview or just visit the doctor's office. Inform the doctor of your choice so he/she will be prepared to visit you in the hospital after your baby's birth.
  • Pack your labor bag and overnight suitcase. As a minimum, purchase basic items for your baby such as diapers, undershirts and a few outfits.

  • Common tests: Glucose screening test to detect gestational diabetes, group B strep test, blood count to test for anemia.
  • Common symptoms: Fatigue, swelling, leg cramps, faintness, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, leg and back pain, overheating, shortness of breath, change of appetite, heartburn, stretch marks, Braxton Hicks contractions, apprehension, difficulty sleeping, and breast leakage.
  • Signs that you need medical help: Marked decrease or absence of fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, sudden weight gain, marked swelling of face and hands, blurred vision, severe headache, severe abdominal pain, gush or flow of vaginal fluid.
