Q:
How do I know if my baby is allergic to dairy products? A doctor at the hospital said so because her nose was running, one ear was leaking and her chest was wheezing.
A:
Runny noses, chronic ear infections and wheezing are often signs of a food allergy, so unless your baby just happened to have a cold, I would say the physician is most likely correct.
The best way to find out is to take away the most obvious dairy foods, like milk or formula, and see if your baby gets better. Speak to the doctor about substituting soy milk or soy formula instead of milk-based liquids. Continuing to give your child something he may be allergic to can cause more problems as he grows. So if it's a true milk allergy, you may want to speak to a nutritionist about how to eliminate all milk proteins from your child's diet.
