Q:
My son is hooked on video games and plays them for hours on end. Is this causing him harm, and how do I get him to play with them less?
A:
Video games are fun but addictive. It's not uncommon for children to play these games hour after hour at home and then carry a portable game in the car to play some more. As you can imagine, one of the problems with the child who constantly plays video games is that he's isolated from family and friends.
Just as you wouldn't let your child watch television or eat candy all day, it's not a good idea to let him constantly play video games.
In other words, it's okay to set limits. Kids need them. Otherwise, they go to extremes.
I suggest that you and your husband agree on a reasonable amount of time to let him play video games each day, and present this rule to your son. Also, use his interest in video games as a motivator. For example, if he responsibly completes his homework or his chores, he earns 20 minutes of time to play video games.
