Q:
My 11-month-old son weaned himself from the bottle one night and now drinks from a cup. However, he drinks about 6 to 10 ounces a day, and I'm worried that it's not enough. I have tried numerous cups, thinking that was the problem. I change about four wet diapers a day, so I know he's not dehydrated. Should I tell his pediatrician?
A:
You can relax, Mary. You're doing everything right. I wouldn't worry about his fluid intake as long as he continues to urinate regularly. We get so concerned about liquids, and we're so used to measuring them with bottles, that we forget there's also water in other foods that we eat.
Your son is old enough for table foods, so consider thin soups cooled to barely warm, gelatin and ice cream. His abrupt weaning may be his message to you that he's ready to move to the next phase of his eating adventure!
