Q:
I’m in a serious relationship with a man who has an 18-month-old son from a former marriage. I watch the boy on weekends, and I love him as my own. But I don’t know much about raising children. What are some things that we can do around the house? I’m scared to let him out of my sight.
A:
You should child-proof your house to minimize the number of ways he might get hurt or damage something. For example, buy covers for the electrical outlets and put up gates by stairs. You don’t want him to have the full run of the house. Little boys this age love to climb, so be on the lookout for any potential dangers in that regard. As you know, he can’t anticipate danger from his actions.
I also suggest you read the book “What To Expect The Toddler Years,” by Arlene Eisenberg, Heidi Murkoff and Sandee Hathaway.
