Easing the transition from the family bed to her own bed
Q:
Our 14-month-old daughter still sleeps with us. What's the best way to get her in her bed with as little stress on her as possible? She's so sweet and loveable. We're concerned that the stress of moving her into her bed may change her attitude this late in the game.
A:
Unfortunately, Frank, there's no stress-free way of teaching a 14-month-old child to sleep alone in her own bed after she has become used to sleeping with her parents. Your daughter absolutely will not like the change, and she will cry.
If you're very troubled about making her unhappy, you may benefit from the assistance of a child psychologist, who can offer strategies to help you through the transition. Ask your pediatrician for a referral. Good luck!
