Great Expectations: understanding what’s beyond your toddler’s limits
Q: What’s the biggest mistake that parents make with toddlers?
A: They expect too much. That means that when their child doesn’t rise to their expectations, they either think that they’re failing as a parent, or that their kid is turning into a brat.

The secret to avoiding this mistake is to understand the toddler’s true nature. He doesn’t have a formed conscience. He doesn’t know right from wrong. He tends to obey only when a parent is hovering over him. He can hear a rule a million times and still ignore it. He’s impulsive. He demands instant gratification. He’s self-centreed and driven to do whatever feels good to him.

It’s no wonder these years are known as the terrible twos!
