Q:
I’m not a coffee drinker but I am hooked on soft drinks. Do I have to give up all caffeinated soft drinks until after I have the baby, or is it okay to have one a day? I’ve heard conflicting arguments from my well-intentioned friends and family, but feel like I need the kick I get from cola.
A:
Dear Kayla,
There are no medical studies evaluating the amount of soft drinks, tea or coffee with caffeine that are safe for pregnancy. I ask my patients to moderate the amount of soft drinks, tea, and coffee they consume. Why don’t you settle for one caffeinated soft drink daily and enjoy your pregnancy?
