Is sedation safe?
Q: How safe is sedation for a 2-year-old who needs cavities filled?
A: I should start my answer to your question with the statement that I have treated children for over 20 years and realize that everything we do has risks. Trying to treat a 2-year-old in an office setting with no sedation used to be common, but restraint was used and the child would fight and scream for the entire appointment and would be at risk for injury or aspirating objects. If that child was sedated, the treatment can be done in a safer manner without the above problems and probable fear of dentistry. It may help you to think of it this way: would you prefer to have your child's tonsils done in an office, or with sedation?
