Can my preteen son take care of his 5-year-old brother while I’m at work?
Q:
I have two sons, ages 12 and 5. Is it OK to leave them at home when I’m at work? Is there a law stating what age they can be left home alone?
A:
I’m not sure about the law, but it’s risky leaving a 12-year-old child in charge of a 5-year-old child. Even if your son is mature and responsible, 12-year-olds are easily distracted and can make poor judgments. You’re better off having an older person look after your younger son while you’re at work.
